Overview
During the Third Reich just outside of Berlin, the Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp was the headquarters of the whole Nazi concentration camp system. On this tour, you will learn more about the bleak and complex history of the Holocaust including why and how such atrocities ended up being committed.
The Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp located just outside of Berlin was the headquarters of the whole concentration camp network in the Third Reich. Tens of thousands of victims suffered under the persecution of the SS and camp guards and some of the worst atrocities of mankind took place not only there but across the territories annexed by the Nazi regime.
In this tour, you will learn more about what life was like for a prisoner in Sachsenhausen and how the camp was run by the security officials in charge. This deeply sensitive subject also explains the complex and brutal history behind the Holocaust and tries to answer questions as to why it happened and how it got to this devastating stage as World War II progressed.
Conditions in the camp worsened after the start of the war and the SS used Sachsenhausen to carry out acts of mass murder on 10,000 Soviet prisoners of war in 1941. You will learn about escape attempts by some Jewish prisoners and the tunnel dug by the British prisoner of war "Jimmy" James. Barbarous medical experiments were also conducted on prisoners and as the Nazi regime was coming to an end, many of the remaining prisoners were forced on a death march in unbearable conditions.
After the camp was "liberated" by Soviet troops, the communist regime continued to use Sachsenhausen for their own political enemies where atrocities still continued. The group will also learn also how the East German regime manipulated the history of the camp for its own
